Renaldo and the Wroten

"When filming had just begun on The Human Elbow, I got a wonderful idea while mowing. I decided to ask Renaldo of Renaldo and the Loaf if he'd do some music for the movie. While trying to fill my entire Renaldo and the Loaf collection, I came across Worm Pizza. I contacted Paul Wilson from http://www.theresidents.co.uk to ask about receiving a copy of the disc, and politely asked if he could ask Renaldo himself to email me (I figured they knew each other).

"A week or so later, Renaldo emailed me, and we had a little chatting back and forth before I sprung the question on him."

The idea of writing a song for your film is intriguing. I guess it would depend on timeframe.... I'd be interested more in the music side as I'm not so much into lyrics nowadays. Tell me a bit more about the project. Can I get to see Tapeworm?

"About three months later, the movie was getting close enough to completion that I'd need a definite answer. I also asked him if he'd do a voice over for a radio in the movie, and he agreed to that at the very least."

Good to know you have your movie ready...can I do the radio thing and email you the file? Is a WAV file OK...or do you have to have .aiff? Sorry I found no time to compose an Ode to Billy...the days/weeks/months just shoot by...if you have some Ode music/lyric ideas I could sing it for you...like a guest vocalist. Do you have the technology to add my voice to a recording if you send me a backing track? If your deadline doesn't allow for this I'm cool with it....I just feel a bit sheepish that I didn't get to do some music for you.

"I next wrote some music for this Ode to Billy and sent it to him. I recorded/remixed the drums, bass, and guitar and sent them to him to work with. Two months later, after the Christmas holiday and other such time constraints, he sent me not only the finished version with lyrics... it also had more instruments!"

Well....hope the end result was worth waiting for...I'm happy with it. As with any project I can think of tweaks and other ideas but I/we have to call a halt sometime :0)

I was particularly happy with the chorus...could sort of imagine reconfiguring the piece one day as a stand-alone song.

"He also sent me his overdubs separately, and I created a remix for the DVD's menu music using some of the overdubs he didn't have time to use. By the time all of this was done, Milligan Tribute Band was in the works and I asked him if he'd like to do another radio voice... so you can find him in there too...

"It was a huge honor to work with Renaldo, and it was a lot of fun working back and forth over the internet between South Carolina and England. Hopefully we'll get to work together again someday."
